Solidarity act for Sakineh and against Stoning. We will be holding up a banner for about 15 minutes. The exact location sadly cannot be made public untill afterwards.
On such short notice, sadly we are not allowed to protest for a long time, inside the city centre or with a lot of people (and some other things I'm leaving out for now), so this is a big spoiler. If you'd like to hold another protest in town, contact ROEZ f...or info about licences, locations where protesting without a license is allowed and do let your local police station know!
Of course the other ways to contribute are also good options for those who can't or won't protest. For example, you can send protest letters to the Iranian government, or send a postcard to Sakineh. And please DO sign the petition!

American Humanist Association Supports International Day Against Stoning
(Washington, D.C. – July 11, 2011)
Today, on the International Day Against Stoning, the American Humanist Association is raising awareness of the brutal practice of stoning and demanding the end of stoning as a form of punishment around the world.
The American Humanist Association stands beside the International Committee Against Stoning and its effort to eradicate the cruel tradition of stoning, an inhumane method of punishment which affects predominantly women and girls in developing countries. Fundamentalist religious zealots around the world are responsible for enacting laws based on stringent and unforgiving moral codes, sometimes punishable by sentences such as stoning to death. Women are stoned for “offenses” such as giving birth out of wedlock, extramarital affairs, and even in response to false accusations of murder.
Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who has been imprisoned along with her lawyer for four years, was sentenced by the courts of the Islamic Republic of Iran for various charges of being an accessory to murder, public indecency (for appearing in court without the traditional Islamic veil) and adultery. International pressure has resulted in a stay of her execution, but she and her lawyer still remain in prison. This pattern of indicting women on false accusations, and on grounds of violating strict religious requirements, places a heavy burden on women to obey laws set in place by the influence of male clergy and lawmakers.
The American Humanist Association condemns the act of stoning as brutal and inhumane. Humanists worldwide strive to protect the dignity of all and work to protect those accused of crimes based on fundamentalist restrictions on women. We are proud to support the International Committee Against Stoning and the Save Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani Campaign in their efforts to end this practice.

Women are more than half of humanity! Stoning is among the most the barbaric violence of the 21st century and massacres against women are perpetrated over and over again! In Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Sudan, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Yemen, to name the main countries, death by stoning is still a punishment to which women - mostly - are still subject to… And ironically among these countries some have signed conventions of Human Rights.
Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani has languished for too many years in an Iranian jail. She has already been punished with 99 lashes administered in the presence of one of her two children.
How can we speak of "justice"? Stoning in Iran is a political tool in the hands of a, religious, Islamic, archaic and repressive regime decided to oppress the society in one of the hardest ways that exist.
In countries experiencing armed conflicts and in countries that have introduced Sharia law, violence against women is organized. Women who cannot defend themselves are the victims of fanatics and Islamic courts.
Today the voice of Sakineh reached the world and today Sakineh represents all victims of obscurantism.
In Belgium we demand the abolition of stoning, which is a brutal murder that nothing can justify.
On the International Day against Stoning in Belgium we say stop stoning now!

Soraya Manutcheri was stoned to death in the village of Kupayeh, Iran in 1986. She was framed by her husband who wished to avoid support payments in his desire to divorce her. He used a legal system imposed by the Islamic Republic of Iran called “Sharia” -- which justifies the torture and suppression of its citizens, especially women. Since Soraya’s case innumerable women have been silenced by a repressive regime. This must stop. I commend the StopStoningNow campaign for bringing attention to the continuing grave injustice of stoning.

Stoning to death is the world’s oldest form of brutal execution; it is a cruel insane punishment that was derived from Hammurabi’s laws in Iraq thousands of years before the three Abrahamic religions. Later, It was adopted by Judaism... up until Jesus famous anti stoning statement "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone’’. But it was re-enforced during the first years of Islam and practiced today in some fundamentalist Muslim States.
Although there is no trace for this crime in any verses in the Quran... yet there are several talks about Omer Ben Al Qattab confirming that it was mentioned in some verses of the Quran, and that the prophet practiced it and all his companions followed his action... meaning that the entire community participates in this horrible act which dissolve the barrier of humanity in the community and the individual. And allows for a culture of violence in the society.
The procedure is extremely barbaric and bloody, and plants the seeds for a culture of continuous humiliation and demonization of women.
I urge all women to stand against it and urge the UN to ban any member state that allows it from gaining its membership. As well as depriving it from international community aid.
For a universal culture of peace we need to confirm universality of human rights in particular women's rights.

I was appalled to learn that stoning is a punishment that is included in the laws in six Islamic countries - Iran, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Pakistan, Yemen, the United Arab Emirates - and some states in Nigeria. DAY OF ACTION: 11 July, International Day against Stoning

11 July, the International Day against Stoning, will soon be here.
As you know Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani is still languishing in prison. The authorities recently mentioned her case saying that no final decision had yet been reached on her stoning sentence and that Sakineh must remain in prison. Falsely accused of murdering her husband, her only crime is that she is a woman in Iran. Her lawyer, Sajjad Houtan Kian, also remains in prison for having had the courage to defend her and other women with stoning sentences in Tabriz prison; he has been sentenced to four years imprisonment, been put under a lot of pressure and lost 20 kilos (44 pounds) as a result.
The campaign to Save Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani has been an important one. It has spoken out in defence of humanity, and against the barbaric punishment of stoning everywhere. It has mobilised immense pressure against and condemnation of the Islamic regime of Iran from millions across the globe. These are accomplishments we must all be proud of.
On 11 July 2011, the International Day against Stoning, let’s once again step up the pressure to demand Sakineh’s immediate release and an end to stoning. Join us by either standing in a city square with a photo or poster of Sakineh, tweeting, or by organising an act of solidarity or a flash mob to raise awareness and attention. On 11 July, in 100 cities worldwide, let us once again raise the banner of humanity against one of the barbarisms of our time.

In memory of Neda and the thousands and thousands of others...
It has been...
2 years to the day that Neda Agha Soltan was shot dead by the Iranian regime's forces.
...30 years to the day that the regime started its purge of people and acitivists to secure its power. There were thousands of arrests and people were executed a couple of hours after their arrest. There were up to 500 executions a day. Women and girls who were still virgins were raped before execution to make sure they wouldn't go to heaven.
The killing and torture continue. So does the struggle of the Iranian people!

There were up to 500 executions a day. Women and girls who were still virgins were raped before execution to make sure they wouldn't go to heaven.
The killing and torture continue. So does the struggle of the Iranian people!

20 June: Support political prisoners in Iran
It has been two years since the uprising in Iran Iran
The Campaign to free political prisoners in Iran (CFPPI) has called for a day of action in support of political prisoners for this coming Monday, June 20.
Iran Solidarity is calling on everyone to come out in support of political prisoners this Monday.
They need your support and your voices! The pressure of people from around the world must not falter if we want to see an end to the torture and execution of political prisoners and see the end of the Islamic regime.
There are nearly 50 cities taken part now. Have a look below and join them! Or do an act of support yourself and get in touch.

Letter of Mohammad and Abdallah Fathi’s mother to her sons after their final meeting
My dear ones, I wanted to tell you how close, on the morning of the 17th of May, was the last dawn of your lives to your final twilight. I wanted to weep from dawn to dusk from the grief of your loss; but I saw that strangers, your fiendish executioners, were sitting there watching, able to see my tears, and I was seized by dread, since my sons' last request had been "mother, do not cry, because crying is for those whose work in this world is finished and whose lives have come to an end"! Truly this was not sundown, but a dawn following swiftly and without delay on the heels of another.
Mohammad, when I saw your stately countenance, your boundless pride, your beautiful smile, your fortitude, your dignity, that broad chest and those powerful arms, and your striking prismatic eyes which had the beauty of the rainbow, I remembered something you always used to say. "The rainbow is what remains until the last drop of rain". And how beautifully you, likewise, shone to the last, showing that the end of a life, even at the hands of executioners and hangmen and tyrants, is not death but the burgeoning of a new beginning, and filling me with indescribable pride.
And Abdallah, you who were the smallest fruit of my garden - until our final meeting, I still considered you my little baby, who still needed attention and care. But then I saw you standing firm and proud, with a sweet smile on your face, your eyes sparkling and your chest and arms surging with power, resolutely ordering the soldiers who stood in my way to move back because you wanted to speak to me in private; and although your hands and feet were bound, and they were apparently under orders from the commander in chief, they retreated. At that moment I understood how my little boy had grown, and that I need not worry about him - and how proud and gratified I was.
I had big dreams, and yet bigger dreams, and they were all about my dear ones. When each of you first entered this world, I was joyful as any mother would be, and with each new day of your lives, your very existence filled me with happiness. But I want you to know that your departure has given me a feeling which is beyond joy, pride or peace, and which I do not know how to describe or express. You have made me proud and honoured to be the mother of such sons. Like all humans, you entered this life empty-handed, with your minds as empty slates. But you take your leave of this world brimming with honour, valour, manliness, love, compassion, brotherhood, humanity, forgiveness, and a devotion to freedom, and now you go joyfully to that new dawn, entering eternity with a smile on your lips. The roiling of your blood has made its mark on history as a beacon to those who strive for justice and humanity; and nobody, and nothing, can compare with this. Look behind you: your friends are following you.

نامه ی مادر محمد وعبدالله فتحی خطاب به فرزندانش بعد از آخرین دیدار
عزیزانم میخواستم به شما بگویم که در سحرگاه 27 اردیبهشت آخرین طلوع زندگیتان چه زود به غروب زندگیتان پیوست.
میخواستم به تمامی پهنای طلوع خورشید و غروب خورشید در غم از دست دادنتان گریه کنم ولی دیدم که نامحرمان جلاد ودیو سیرت آنجا به نظاره نشسته اند تا اشکهای پاک مرا ببینند، به خود نهیب زدم که آخرین خواسته ی فرزندانم این بوده که مادرم گریه نکن چون گریه برای کسیست که کارش در این دنیا تمام میشود وعمرش به پایان میرسد.!
در واقع غروبی نبود بلکه طلوعی بود از پس طلوع دیگر بدون درنگ وتامل.
محمدم وقتی سرو قامتی ،غرور بی انتها ، لبخند زیبا ،اعتماد به نفس ، سر برافراشته ات ،آن سینه ی فراخ ، بازوان پر قدرت وچشمان زیبای هفت رنگت که به زیبایی رنگین کمان بود را دیدم یادم به این جمله ی زیبایی که همیشه میگفتی افتاد که: رنگین کمان سهم آنیست که تا آخرین قطره زیر باران بماند وتو چه زیبا به این سهم رسیدی و نشان دادی که پایان زندگی آن هم به دست جلادان و دژخیمان وضحاکان مرگ نیست. بلکه جوشش و خروش و رویش مجدد است و به من احساس غرور وصف ناپذیری دست داد.
واما عبدالله تو که کوچکترین میوه ی باغ زندگیم بودی تا لحظه ای که با توآخرین دیدار را داشتم هنوز تو را فرزند کوچک خود میپنداشتم یعنی کسی که هنوز احتیاج به مراقبت و نگهداری دارد وزمانی که دیدم تو چگونه استوار ، محکم ،سر برافراشته ، با لبخند شیرین ،چشمان شفاف ودرخشان ،سینه ی ستبر و بازوان نیرومند آنجا حضور پیدا کردی و هنگامی که با لبخند شیرین ، با صلابت ،استواری وتحکم به سربازانی که مارا محاصره کرده بودند فرمان دادی عقب بروید با مادرم حرف خصوصی دارم با وجود این که تو دستها وپاهایت بسته بود!آنها نیز گویا از فرمانده کل قوا دستور میگرفتند وآنچنان عقب کشیدند!تازه آن وقت بود که دانستم فرزند کوچکم چقدر بزرگ شده و احتیاج نیست که من نگران او باشم و چقدر احساس وجد وخوشنودی کردم.
عزیزانم زمانی که هر کدام از شما قدم به این دنیا گذاشتید من هم مثل همه ی مادران خوشحال شدم وهر روز که میگذشت برایتان آرزوهای بزرگ وبزرگتر داشتم و فقط از داشتن شما خوشحال بودم ولی دلم میخواهد این را بدانید که رفتن شما احساسی ورای خوشحالی وغروروآرامش به من دادکه نمی دانم آن راچگونه بیان وتوصیف کنم .شما به من عزت وافتخاروغروردادید ازاین که مادر فرزندانی چون شما هستم به خودم می بالم ،شما هما نند تما م انسانهایی که پا به عرصه زندگی می گذارند با دستان خالی وهمچون لوح سفید به این دنیا پا گذاشتید ولی با کوله بارهایی ازغیرت وشرف ،مردانگی ،عشق ، مهربانی ،برادری ،انسانییت ،بخشش ،آزادی خواهی ،با این دنیا وداع کردید وبه طلوع دیگری باشادی ولبخند پیوستید ودرابدیت جاری شدید وجوش وخروش خون شما درپیکر تاریخ عدالت خواهی وانسانییت به جریان افتاد وهیچ چیز وهیچ کس رایارای مقابله باآن نیست نگاهی به پشت سرتان بیندازید ، یاران شما از پی تان روانند .

Osanloo free at last
ITF Press Release
The ITF is delighted to announce that imprisoned trade unionist Mansour Osanloo was today freed from jail in Iran almost four years since his arrest and imprisonment, which set off a storm of international protest.
His release is conditional on his ‘good behaviour’ and the payment of a bond.
The ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) has led demands for Mansour Osanloo’s release. ITF general secretary David Cockroft commented: “This is a great day for Mansour and his family – and for his fellow Vahed union members and those of us in the international trade union movement who are honoured to call him a friend. It’s doubly welcome given the deterioration in his health during his time behind bars.
“He is free because trade unionists worldwide demanded justice.”
He continued: “That bail has been set falls short of the full pardon we all wanted, and which the Iranian government promised, but for now we can just take a moment to savour his richly deserved return to his family.”
“But – and sadly even on a day as good as this one there has to be a but – there are other innocents in jail in Iran for the same ‘crime’ of wanting to join a trade union. They include Mansour’s colleagues, Reza Shahabi and Ebrahim Madadi. For all of them, and us, the fight is not over. As much as we welcome the Iranian government’s move and its finally listening to reason, we know we must renew our insistence that those other prisoners are set free and the threat of re-arrest lifted from Mansour, and then commit the ITF, our member unions and friends in the trade union and human rights movements to campaigning on their behalf.”
The Vahed Syndicate responded to the news by saying that they would like to thank everyone who has fought so hard for his release.
Mansour Osanloo was a bus driver and is the president and one of the founding members of the Vahed Syndicate, a free trade union representing Tehran's bus workers. From its beginnings in 2005 the ITF-affiliated union was subjected to heavy repression, including repeated attacks and arrests. Mansour Osanloo was heavily targeted. As well as being beaten up and having his tongue slit he was imprisoned in 2005 and 2006. Then in 2007, just one month after visiting the London head office of the ITF and meeting trade unionists in Brussels, he was arrested. Three months later he was sentenced to five years imprisonment on charges of ‘acting against national security’ and ‘propaganda against the state’; in 2010 another year was added to his sentence. In reality his only offence was to help found a genuinely democratic trade union.

Authoritarian sadism

Dear Iransolidarity,
I thought you might be interested in an incident that happened to me yesterday.
I went to my local dry-cleaner and shoe repair shop with a sandal that needed a few stitches. The shop -- so far as I know -- is owned and run by Kurds and at least two of the assistants in the shop are Iranian Kurds. One of them is a young man who sits in the window working at his sewing machine repairing clothes. He is not always there, so I was very glad on Thursday to see that he was; the weather is hot and I wanted my sandal repaired as quickly as possible.
The repair man speaks only very basic English so we rarely exchange more than a few friendly words of greeting but as I put the sandal on the counter and said how glad I was to see him, I noticed that he really did not look all that well. I asked him if he had lost weight. He said he might have. I then asked if he had been trying to lose weight or if he was ill. He said he had been having some family troubles.
Then he said that three weeks ago his brother, married with five children,had been hanged in Iran.
I could not get much information about the circumstances. I was too shocked and the young man's English was not good enough but he told me that all that had happened was that his brother had got into trouble with his papers.
Apparently his family were then subjected to what I believe is an entirely typical sort of authoritarian sadism -- they were told shortly after the arrest "don't worry, he'll be free by next week". Then a few days later they got the news that he had been hanged.
I suppose the monster who promised the family their son, brother, husband and father's freedom in a few days is still laughing over the joke he had made about the nature of liberty.

I thought you might be interested in an incident that happened to me yesterday.
I went to my local dry-cleaner and shoe repair shop with a sandal that needed a few stitches. The shop -- so far as I know -- is owned and run by Kurds and at least two of the assistants in the shop are Iranian Kurds. One of them is a young man who sits in the window working at his sewing machine repairing clothes. Iran Solidarity in Brazil
On our recent trip to Brazil we were able to establish a new branch of Iran Solidarity in Rio de Janeiro! More info and hopefully more branches of Iran Solidarity there to follow. Viva Brazil!

Here is the report of the recent trip of the delegation of the International Committee against Stoning (ICAS)in Brazil. The trip focused on the human rights abuses in Iran under the Islamic regime, especially the ongoing wave of executions and stoning. Mina Ahadi, spokesperson of ICAS, continued her lobbying work for the release of Sakineh Ashtiani and her lawyer Houtan Kian.

In solidarity with student protests in Iran on Sunday, May 15
Students from over 30 universities across Iran, including the cities of Tehran, Tabriz, Esfahan, Karaj and Gilan, are going to protest this coming Sunday to call for the release of all student political prisoners and against the dictatorship under the Islamic regime of Iran.
Student activists in Iran are routinely banned from studying, imprisoned and tortured. They are put in solitary confinement, barred from visitation rights and they are sentenced to years in prison just for being student activists. Milad Asadi, Ashkan Zahabian, Zia Nabavi, Arash Sadeghi, Sarah Mahboubi and Fouad Sojoudi are just a few of the dozens and dozens of students currently in prison.
In a statement the students said: “At a time when the wind of Spring is blowing throughout the Middle East, Iran has not been exempted from the fragrance of this wind and once again, the universities, the bastion of steadfastness and resistance, stood up from under attack of the anti-freedom despots and gave new hopes to those eager for freedom that: yes, universities are alive... Because when despotism is on the throne, silence is not our virtue.”
We salute the courage of the student activists and of all those who are going to protest this Sunday in the face of utmost repression by the Islamic regime in Iran. We hope you join us in calling for an end to the imprisonment, torture and persecution of student activists and we demand their immediate release.

International Committee against Execution delegates meet Brazilian government

A delegation of International Committee Against Execution (ICAE), consisting of Mina Ahadi and Patty Debonitas (also Spokesperson of Iran Solidarity) met with the Millenium Institute based in Rio de Janeiro today with a series of politicians of the Brazilian government to discuss the human rights violations in Iran, specifically stoning and executions and the case of Sakineh Ashtiani.
The meetings were part of a tour that started in Sao Paulo on 3 May with a day long conference on "democracy & freedom" at which Mina Ahadi, spokesperson of ICAS, gave a speech on Iran and took part in the panel on democracy, freedom and human rights.
The delegation was in the capital Brasilia today, welcomed first by the minister Maria Do Rosario, secretary for human rights accompanied by Fabio Balestro Floriano, the director of the secretariat of human rights, department of international relations. Minister Do Rosario expressed her and president Dilma Rousseff's solidarity with women facing violence and stated the Brazilian government's willingness for an open dialogue with Mina Ahadi and her cause.
Ms Ahadi related the wishes and hopes of mothers and children whose loved ones are facing execution in Iran to the Brazilian government. Ms Ahadi talked specifically about the case of Ms Ashitani who has been sentenced to death by stoning. Minister Do Rosario stated that the 'death penalty is always a horror' and that stoning is 'unacceptable'. She added that the Brazilian government is not only committed to show solidarity with victims but to also rescue them.
In a second meeting at the Senate, the delegation met with the president of the human rights committee of the Brazilian Senate, Senator Paulo Paim. He said that the fight against violence is an ongoing fight and stated that he would present a resolution to the Human Rights Committee for discussion and approval stressing the importance of human rights in the world and to especially condemn the stoning of women in Iran.
Mina Ahadi states that the Brazilian government must put more pressure on those governments that practise stoning and should cut their diplomatic relations with those governments.
Mina Ahadi will be speaking about the human rights situation in Iran and the case of Sakineh Ashtiani tomorrow, Friday 6 May at the IBMEC University of Rio de Janeiro.
